health and well being of happy, housebroken
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy dogs. Our puppies leave us when they are eating solid food and have been health tested. Photos are avaible upon request and will be e-mailed to you.
Most of our current puppies will be fully innoculated, health tested, microchipped, crate, litterbox and part to fully housebroken. Our miniatures are more expensive than our standard, due to having special treatment to ensure no congenital issues for the future. Please be respectful that we put immense time into our genetic research to avoid mvd or neuro issues. King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are exceptional companions for young and old. They rarely bark, are never aggressive, destructive, or hyper. Instead, they quietly engage people with their expressive, soulful eyes exuding the love and acceptance they feel for their two-legged friends. They are from healthy (eye and heart clear), predominately champion pedigrees, and are treated with their well-being always in mind, as part of my family until they become part of yours.Cavaliers returned that love and respect.Cavaliers do have genetic health issues to be concerned about, to help reduce the chances of producing puppies with health issues, it is vitally important to breed healthy sound dogs that have been clear several generations back. ALL our dogs are OFFA Eye and Heart certified... ,I am committed to continually produce healthy, beautiful Cavaliers, keeping to the breed standard. To help achieve this we do show our dogs and have produced several AKC champions here at saltayre Cavaliers. I communicate with and learn from breeders across the US who are also members of AKC who are also show/breeders and who are committed to improving the Cavalier breed.Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the oldest of the toy spaniel breed. Cavaliers have made a real comeback since 1928 when the breed was resurrected from almost total extinction. Cavaliers are noted for their mellow, affectionate, and very loving dispositions. They are happy, fearless spaniels who enjoy playing with children as well as warming the lap of an adult. The Cavalier is a highly intelligent and good natured little dog.
They are usually twelve to thirteen inches tall, and weigh twelve to eighteen pounds. Characterized by long flowing ears, and large soft eyes, Cavaliers come in four colors: Blenheim (pronounced Blenheim; chestnut red and white), tricolor (black and white with tan points), ruby (all red), and black and tan. Their personality is much like a Golden Retriever; loving, devoted, quick to learn and eager to please. They travel well and are a perfect companion for both active and sedentary lifestyles. They love children and other pets and are NEVER cross or snappy. They make good watchdogs as they will bark to alert, but do not keep on yapping like many smaller breeds are known to do. They require no professional grooming and have a soft, lustrous odor-free coat. They do shed, but not excessively. They housebreak quite easily and are very clean natured, making them the perfect house pet.
They are a hardy, healthy breed with few genetic problems. Unfortunately, like many small breeds, they can develop heart murmurs due to valve disease. The CKCS Club and our members are actively working to eliminate this problem in the breed. Some bloodlines seem to be clear of it and other more prone to it. By selective breeding, it may someday be eliminated. Even with the murmur, dogs can live a normal life span and sometimes require medication to control it. Average life span is 12-14 years.
Cavaliers can be extremely silly and comical. They bring joy and laughter to many households. They love to snuggle and are the ultimate huggable lapdog. They are NOT an independent breed and they do require companionship. They should never be left outside in kennels and must be treated as a family member. They prefer to sleep in their master's bed and be by his side most of the time. Those dark Spaniel eyes can melt anyone's heart! Yes, Cavaliers are more expensive than many breeds. This is due to very selective and limited breeding, extensive health checks and limited supply. We hope to keep them out of puppy mills, pet shops and dog pounds. Owning a Cavalier is like owning a work of art, only this one will love you back.
Selecting a puppy should be a well thought out decision. We want our puppies to be a cherished family member, to travel with you, sleep in bed with you and be your loving companions. Although we would like to supply you with the color and sex you want at the perfect time,we don't breed for quantity, so there may be a wait. We try to match the puppy’s personality with yours. Thus we have an adoption form and we meet with you by phone) and get to know you and your family.BRINGING HOME YOUR PUPPY
Dishes, Toys, the Crate & Bed, Grooming Supplies, and Food:
Practical Dishes: Practical dog dishes are easy to clean and very difficult to tip over. You should have two separate bowls, one for food and one for water. Don't buy two bowls bonded together as you can't take away just one or the other if needed. Place the bowls where they are easily accessible to your puppy and will not slide around when he eats or drinks.
Toys: There are many unsafe and few safe toys on the market. Cavaliers are smaller dogs and therefore, have smaller throats and are more likely to choke on pieces of toys which can be chewed off. All rubber toys must be made of hard rubber so your puppy cannot chew them up and choke on small pieces. Also, many toys have squeakers which are small white plastic at the air opening and these squeakers will come out after being chewed on. This is not a big concern to a bigger dog, but it could be the last toy your Cavalier ever played with. So, look for squeaky toys which have a small opening but not a separate piece that makes it squeak. Our favorite toys are tennis balls (safe for Cavaliers but maybe not bigger breeds), Nylabones, and very tight solid rope bones (good for puppy's teeth).
Grooming: Little grooming is required for Cavaliers, especially puppies. Cavaliers do not come into their adult coat until they are 1-2 years old. A good brushing once a week with your basic bristle dog brush will prevent you from having a matted coat. Cavaliers will develop longer hair feathering of their ears, chest, tail, and behind their legs. These areas can develop knots and are easily removed with a wire slicker brush. You may on occasion have to cut one out if it is left unattended for a long period of time. There is to be not trimming of the Cavalier except for between the pads on the underside of the feet. These areas will make it easier for your Cavalier to walk, and will prevent him from picking up dirt, mud, ice balls in the snow, etc. .. Do not trim off the hair growing on the top of the feet, as this will develop into the look of "slippers" which every Cavalier should have.
Bed: Every dog needs a place of its own where he feels safe and secure. Dogs are naturally den animals, as were their ancestors, and instinctually enjoy seeking refuge in a small cozy area. This will be his area to go when he is tired and wants to get away from all the action in order to get some rest.
You will need to begin a regimented routine as soon as your puppy comes home. A puppy 10-12 weeks old will need to go out about every two hours the first week just to learn where he is to go out when he needs to relieve himself. This time can quickly be lengthened so that within two weeks, you only have to let him out about every three hours, depending on the puppy's age. Watch for what he does right before he relieves himself. This will clue you in as to when he needs to go out the next time. NEVER crate a puppy for more than three hours in the beginning. Set crate or bed inside X-Pen and leave available to him with an open door to X-Pen during the day. You will be surprised at how quickly he will become comfortable with it and go in for a nap when he is tired. Teach any children that this is the place for the puppy to be alone. If he goes in there, the children MUST leave him alone. Otherwise, he will not view it as a safe place to go when he needs to rest.
X-Pen: You can find them at most pet shops or feed shops, Pet Co, PetSmart, etc. These pens are great when your not able to keep a eye on puppy the first few months you have your puppy. If you have other dogs it provides a safe place for him until he can fend for himself. Keep his kennel inside the pen so he has his place to nap, have an area away from his food and kennel where you can set a pee pad down so he learns to pee in one spot. You can take him outside every few hours so again he learns where to go. After a while you will be able to open the door to the x-pen and he will go outside himself. When you are able to keep an eye on the puppy let him play outside the X-pen, hopefully that will be often
Food: Puppies are very active and, like babies, have special nutrition requirements. A high quality puppy food which has a high protein content, derived from meat as its primary product, should be used. A dog food containing corn or other bulk product as its first ingredient is only about 50% digestible. A dog food in which the first ingredient is chicken, or lamb, or beef is about 80% digestible. When a dog eats a "corn" diet, 50% of it stays in him and 50% of it is waste. when a dog eats a "meat" diet, 80% of it stays in him and only 20% of it is waste. So, when a higher quality dog food is used, your puppy gets better nutrition, less food can be fed, and less stool is excreted.
We recommend 50% of puppies diet raw and 50% kibbles , we will give you a food list before you take your puppy home. I will also give you more information about feeding your dog a raw diet, which we here at Castle Creek highly recommend.
Your puppy will go home with a supply of the food we have been feeding him. If you decide to switch your puppy's food, wait until he settles into his new home, then feed 75% present food with 25% of the new food for 2-3 days. Then use 50%-50%, then 25%- 75%, and finally 100% of his new food. This is just a guideline. It doesn't have to be exactly like this, but make the change gradually over a period of a week or so. This will prevent stomach upset and diarrhea from the change of food.
A good guide for feeding your puppy is to feed him three times daily until 12 weeks of age, then twice daily. Feed according to the recommendations on the puppy food bag, but adjust this amount to your puppy. If he is plump, then he is eating enough, if he is slim, feed a little more. Remember that a growing puppy needs proper nutrition, but once grown, he must NEVER be overfed, as this can shorten his life span dramatically. Also, DO NOT get into the irreversible habit of feeding your Cavalier table scraps while your eating. We can guarantee you that this will lead to a begging Cavalier at the dinner table. History
As its name implies, the cavalier King Charles spaniel is derived from spaniel roots. The European toy dogs were probably the result of breeding small spaniels to Oriental toy breeds such as the Japanese Chin and perhaps the Tibetan spaniel. These Tudor lap dogs, known as "comforter spaniels," served as lap and foot warmers, and even surrogate hot-water bottles. In addition, they served the vital function of attracting fleas from their owners' bodies! The toy spaniels became especially popular because they appealed to all members of the family. In the 1700s, King Charles II was so enamored with his toy spaniels that he was accused of ignoring matters of state in favor of his dogs. The dogs were so closely associated with him that they became known as King Charles spaniels. After his death, the Duke of Marlborough took over as the major advocate of the breed; the red and white 'Blenheim' color, which was his favorite, is named after his estate. The King Charles spaniel continued to grace the homes of the wealthy for generations, but with time a shorter-nosed dog was preferred. By the early 1900s, the few dogs that resembled the early members of the breed were considered to be inferior. A twist of fate occurred when a wealthy American, Roswell Eldridge, came to England and offered outlandish prize money for the best 'pointed-nosed' spaniels - those most resembling the old type. Breeders bred their old-type dogs together in an effort to gain the prize, and in so doing, many came to appreciate the old type. Ironically, these dogs, named cavalier King Charles spaniels in honor of the 'cavalier king,' eventually outstripped their short-nosed counterparts in popularity, becoming one of the most popular breeds in England. They were slower to catch on in America, and many cavalier owners fought AKC recognition in an effort to control the problems that so often accompany popularity. In 1996, the AKC recognized the cavalier; it is too early to tell whether its popularity will soar as a result.
MORE HISTORY
Temperament
The cavalier in many ways fits the bill as an ideal house pet. It is sweet, gentle, playful, willing to please, affectionate and quiet. It is amiable toward other dogs, pets and strangers. Outdoors, its spaniel heritage kicks in, and it loves to explore, sniff and chase.
Upkeep
The cavalier needs a fair amount of exercise every day, either in the form of a moderate walk on leash or a romp in a safe area. This is not a breed that should live outdoors. Its long coat needs brushing every other day.
Health
Major concerns: MVD
Minor concerns: patellar luxation, entropion
Occasionally seen: retinal dysplasia
Suggested tests: cardiac, hip, knee, eye
Life span: 9 - 14 years
Form and Function
The cavalier is an elegant, royal, toy spaniel, slightly longer than tall, with moderate bone. It retains the build of a working spaniel, yet in a smaller version. Its gait is free and elegant, with good reach and drive. Its silky coat is of moderate length, with a slight wave permissible. Long feathering on the feet is a breed characteristic. A hallmark of the breed is its gentle, sweet, melting expression. Our Guarantee

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small noble breed with the personality of a BIG dog. Their personality has been compared to that of a Golden Retriever, very loyal, calm and not one bit aggressive. They make excellent pets for both the young and old, get along with all types of animals, and adapt to a variety of different atmospheres. They are easily trained, they love to please. Cavaliers are NOT independent. They are not a dog you can put outside and expect them to thrive on their own. They crave company and need to live in the home and love to sleep alongside their owner. Here’s a taste of what we have accomplished. We enjoy showing our dogs, it is fun and it helps us keep the puppies we produce within breed standards. CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL PUPPIES FOR SALE - Utah DOG BREEDER

They are first and foremost, our beloved companions, raised in our homes, and members of our family. They have been hand raised, well socialized, and once they are full grown, evaluated for joining the breeding program. After several physicals to ensure that they are all in perfect health, not to mention, evaluation of build, structure, and overall confirmation, they have been specially selected to become sires. We have been very blessed by the fine, regal, quality puppies that they have sired. From the outstanding offspring that they have produced, we are confident that they are producing cavaliers that uphold the high standards for the breed as a whole. All of our dogs receive physicals twice a year, are in great health, and free from any physical ailment. All sires are available in the Mesa, Arizona area as well as the Salt Lake City area, with the exception of Lucky, who is only available in the Salt Lake City area. For those breeders who employ Artificial Insemination for their breeding practices and are out of the area, our males are all available for collection and we will help coordinate timely delivery for AI procedures. Please contact us with any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you and producing some amazing puppies!
